Why is Car Storage Necessary in Warm Sunny Florida?

Many people assume that a car is safe from damage when the weather is warm.  Surprisingly this is not true.  Extreme heat and humidity are your cars worst nightmare.

Florida, which is more than 100 miles south of  the southern most point of California, is one of the hottest most humid places in the United States making it one of the most unforgiving climates for a car to live.  Florida experiences the highest average annual temperature complimented with consistent humidity.

This tropical climate wreaks havoc on a cars exterior, interior and mechanical components.  Intense UV rays will fade away a cars exterior finish while drying out leather and vinyl interior parts.  Another problem cause by heat produced by the sun is not so obvious.  According to the Car Care Council battery damage can occur in warmer weather.  Extreme heat will actually shorten battery life by causing battery fluid to evaporate.  The 3.5 year average life of your car’s battery can be substantially shorter in Florida’s hot climate.

In addition to the problems caused by the sun, humidity will do its fare share of damage to your car.  Mold and mildew growth occur more easily in warm weather when relative humidity exceeds 65%.  Average daily relative humidity in Florida will exceed 65% 12 months out of the year.  A car left in an ill equipped garage in Florida will likely develop interior mold and mildew growth.

That's not then end of the damage humidity will cause.  Bare metal surfaces like your brake rotors, and  your engine’s cylinder walls, when left un-used, will begin to develop light surface rust.  Light surface rust eventually turns into heavy surface rust, which causes small pits in the surface of the metal.

What is the best defence against Florida’s harsh climate?

People living in Florida with multiple vehicles should consider storing their extra vehicle in a qualified car storage facility.  The cost to repair the damage caused by Florida’s tropical climate will most likely exceed the cost of storing the vehicle.

Find a long term a car storage facility that maintains 68 degree Fahrenheit air temperature and relative humidity  below 65%.  This  the best defense against climate deterioration to your car.

Florida Facts and Trivia:

The Overseas Highway that connects Miami and Keywest is constructed on top of the Overseas Railroad bed that was abandoned after bankruptcy following damage caused by the 1935 hurricane.   The original cost exceeded $35,000,000 and the lives of 700 men.  The U.S. Government purchased the right of way over the railroad bed for $640,000.  This is the longest overseas highway in the world and extends more than 120 miles into the Atlantic Ocean.

At a place called Spook Hill, located in Lake Wales, east of Tampa, there is a claim that a driver can turn off his or her motor and be pulled 100ft backwards up the hill.
