The Overseas Highway that connects Miami and Keywest is constructed on top of the Overseas Railroad bed that was abandoned after bankruptcy following damage caused by the 1935 hurricane. The original cost exceeded $35,000,000 and the lives of 700 men. The U.S. Government purchased the right of way over the railroad bed for $640,000.
